Current Work

Maria is currently writing a novel, American Kestrel, a story about "learning how to see," told through the eyes of a first-person narrator. The book explores the themes of cultural identity, love of the land and the familial relationship between three generations of Basque women who must face the ultimate consequences of their life choices in the cultural diaspora of the Mountain West.

"Into the Dark." Amatchi, Amuma, Amona, edited by Linda White and Cameron Watson, University of Nevada Press, 2001, pp.35-46.
"Maria Denzler's "Into the Dark" is a haunting lyric tale about the presence of an owl that links a Basque grandmother to her granddaughter. The events of the story transpire over the course of sixty-five years, and yet we feel the connection through the generations as if we had lived those lives ourselves." Linda White, editor
